Kunmanara Pumani

1928 - 2014 South Australia

Language Pitjantjatjara/Yankunytjatjara

Kunmanara was born in 1928 in the bush at Amuroona, a station between Indulkana Community and Mimili on the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands in South Australia. She resided in Mimili with her five children.
Kunmanara was an important lore and culture woman and passed on her extensive knowledge to the younger generation.
She would accompany her father and mother to Antara, a popular area for the collection of Maku (Witchetty Grubs). Her father would hunt for Kangaroo and goanna while the women collected bush tucker. During the night the family would sleep in a Walytja and build a fire for warmth.
